The Inside Out Foundation in Johannesburg's Forest Town was founded in 2023 by Roger Ballen.
Consisting of two centres, the Inside Out Centre for the Arts and The Roger Ballen Centre for Photography, combines photography and art exhibitions with with educational talks and programs. Please see our events tabs for more information on events.
Beyond its exhibition-led programming, the Inside Out Centre for the Arts and the newly opened Roger Ballen Centre for Photography operate as multidisciplinary spaces shaped by a set of parallel and intersecting interests. These include ecology and conservation, psychology and human behaviour, philosophy, spoken word, music, education and African photographic practices.
The Centres programmes reflect the belief that photography and visual art do not exist in isolation, but are deeply connected to broader cultural contexts. This approach has informed a wide range of correlating events hosted at both Centres, including focused talks on art, ecology and psychology, documentary screenings, literary engagements, music performances, educational tours, alternative arts activations and ultimately the promotion of African photography.
By bringing these strands together within a single space, the Centres have cultivated an environment that encourages audiences to engage with arts and culture as both a creative experience as well as a channel through which to examine the complexities of contemporary life.
