About Inside Out Foundation
The Inside Out Foundation is a cultural organisation based in Johannesburg dedicated to art, photography, education and public engagement.

Through exhibitions, programmes and partnerships, the Foundation creates space for looking, learning and exchange, connecting audiences with important artistic voices and ideas from South Africa, the continent and beyond.

At the heart of the Foundation are two connected spaces: the Inside Out Centre for the Arts and the Roger Ballen Centre for Photography.
A foundation for art, photography and public culture
The Inside Out Foundation was established to support artistic and cultural work that opens up dialogue, deepens access and creates meaningful public encounters with art.

Its programme brings together exhibitions, photography, education, talks, workshops and collaborations across disciplines. Rooted in Johannesburg, the Foundation is committed to building a platform that is locally grounded while remaining internationally engaged.
Two centres, one vision
Inside Out Centre for the Arts
The Inside Out Centre for the Arts is a multidisciplinary space for exhibitions, education and cultural programming. It presents work that invites conversation across art forms, disciplines and audiences, and supports a broader understanding of contemporary culture through thoughtful public programming.

Roger Ballen Centre for Photography
The Roger Ballen Centre for Photography is dedicated to the photographic medium and its many possibilities. Through exhibitions and related programming, it provides a space for engagement with photography as art, document, experiment and cultural record.
Together, the two centres reflect the Foundation’s wider commitment to creating serious but accessible encounters with art and visual culture.
What we do
The Foundation’s work includes:
-
exhibitions across art and photography
-
public programmes, including talks, walkabouts and screenings
-
educational initiatives for students, schools and wider audiences
-
partnerships and collaborations with artists, curators, institutions and cultural organisations
-
opportunities for deeper engagement through visits, events and special projects
Education and engagement
Education is central to the Foundation’s mission.

Through school visits, student engagement, public programming and guided encounters with exhibitions, the Foundation aims to make art and photography more accessible to a wide range of audiences. Its programmes are designed not only to support learning, but also to encourage curiosity, exchange and critical looking.
Our approach
The Foundation believes in the value of spaces that are both rigorous and welcoming.

Its work is shaped by a commitment to artistic excellence, public access and meaningful exchange. Whether through an exhibition, an educational programme or a first-time visit, the aim is to create experiences that invite attention, reflection and connection.
